Warther Carvings Museum

A hobo gave Ernest Warther a pocket knife when he was three and it forever changed his life. He started whittling anything he could get his hands on, including sticks. He never stopped carving and continued for 82 long years. His work is on display at the Ernest Warther museum & gardens, where guided tours feature an amazing collection of intricate woodcarvings and provide additional information about this incredible artist.

His most famous piece is the plier tree, with 511 interconnected pliers carved from a single block of wood. He also carved engines and trains, including an 8-foot Lincoln Funeral Train as well as a sculpted historical account of steam engines. Freida, his wife, arranged buttons into patterns in her “button home.”

The museum offers an opportunity to learn about this fascinating man, as well as his family’s business making knives. During business hours, you can watch the Warther’s family at work in their shop.

Schoenbrunn Village

For a small charge, you can visit the reconstructed Schoenbrunn Village. The village was built in the same style as it appeared two centuries ago, and features an original mission graveyard, church and gardens. There are group tours available. A museum and an introductory video help orient visitors to the 16 reconstructed log buildings that make up the village.

In 1772, Moravian missionaries under the leadership of David Zeisberger established a pacifist Christian settlement among Delaware Indians. It was the first settlement in Ohio and the first missionary group west of Pennsylvania. The 300 residents of this settlement drafted the first civil code in Ohio and built the state’s very first Christian school and church. It was abandoned in 1777 due to problems related to the American Revolution.

The reconstructed village consists of 16 reconstructed wooden buildings, as well as an original mission graveyard. It offers a unique perspective on the American Revolution and a rare meeting of Indian and European cultures. It also sheds light on how white Americans viewed the native people as second-class citizens, a view that persists in much of America to this day.
